Recently nicknamed “The Hammerheads,” this percussion group was started in response to the numerous youth who desired to learn to play the drums. Click here to see us in action. This group plays kettledrums, marching bass and snare, full-set, and tympani, and performs at the Christmas and End-Year Concerts. Beginning Band is made up of first-year musicians who desire to learn how to play a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument and rise to the next two levels of expertise. These students not only learn how to play their instrument, but they also learn proper rehearsal technique and etiquette, basic music theory and how to blend their own instrument’s “voice” into the larger ensemble. This lively group of students is affectionately known as “The Boomwackers” and is designed to teach students ages 5-9 the fundamentals of reading music, theory, rhythm and tone by the students playing the recorder, tone chimes, and “boomwackers” (vinyl tubes which, when struck, play various notes). Click here to see us in action. Songs taught include Go Tell Aunt Rhody, Agent BAG, Great is Thy Faithfulness and Be Thou My Vision.
