This advanced band is an audition-only ensemble of brass, woodwinds, and percussion that performs jazz, classical, gospel and other genres. Click here to see us in action. This energetic group challenges its members to higher levels of musical forms and performance. The Alpha Winds performs in the community at various festivals and competitions and youth activities such as the Garden Grove Band Festival, The Ebell Club of Anaheim, Youth Expo, Tustin Tiller Days, the opening of the new Orange Public Library and more. Audition requirements:
Play 8 scales, 5 of them memorized.
Play 5 arpeggios, memorized.
Play the chromatic scale.
Perform a prepared piece.
Read through a sight-reading piece.
Commit to practicing at home a minimum of 2 hours per week.
Demonstrate good tone quality, musicality and rhythmic knowledge.
Trumpets – be able to reach G above the staff with confidence.
Saxophones – be able to reach the upper and lower ranges with confidence, play with good tone quality.
Clarinets – Play above the break with ease.
Percussion – Play 13 rudiments, open and closed roll.
Required equipment:
Instrument, solid black music stand, 1” solid black notebook w/sheet protectors.
